The Practice Behind the Counsel
Understanding who you are working with matters. Here is a closer look at sondeomy — our origins, our people, and the standards that shape every engagement.
Back to HomeOur Story
sondeomy was founded in Ho Chi Minh City by a small group of lawyers who shared a conviction: that legal work, done well, is an act of careful listening as much as it is one of technical proficiency. The name reflects that belief — "sonder" speaks to recognising the complexity of every individual's life, and "brief" to the disciplined communication that good lawyering demands.
From our office on Phạm Ngọc Thạch in District 3, we serve a range of clients — Vietnamese nationals, expatriates, local enterprises, and international firms with operations touching Vietnam. Our practice areas grew organically from the needs we encountered: estate planning for families navigating dual-jurisdiction complexities, environmental advisory for developers facing an evolving regulatory landscape, and arbitration support for parties engaged in cross-border commerce.
We have stayed deliberately small. This is not an accident but a choice. A compact team allows us to maintain a direct relationship between each client and the lawyer handling their matter. There is no hand-off to junior associates for the work that counts. The person you meet in the first consultation is the person who sees your matter through.
Our mission is straightforward: provide attentive, well-prepared legal counsel that respects both the letter of the law and the human circumstances behind every case. We do not aspire to be the largest practice in the city. We aspire to be one that clients remember for clarity, integrity, and care.
Our Team
A small, experienced group with complementary strengths. Every member brings something particular to the table.
Trần Ngọc Minh
Managing Partner
Admitted to the Ho Chi Minh City Bar with over fifteen years of practice. Leads the firm's arbitration advisory and maintains a deep network across ASEAN dispute-resolution institutions.
Lê Phương Anh
Senior Associate — Estate & Succession
Specialises in testamentary arrangements and cross-border succession, with particular attention to expatriate families holding assets in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
Võ Đức Hải
Counsel — Environmental & Land-Use
Formerly with a multinational consultancy, brings technical understanding of environmental impact assessment processes and Vietnam's land-use right framework.
Professional Standards
These are the standards we hold ourselves to. They are not marketing slogans but working commitments observed in every engagement.
Bar Association Compliance
All practicing attorneys are admitted members of the Vietnam Bar Federation and comply with its professional conduct regulations.
Client Confidentiality
We observe strict confidentiality protocols, including encrypted communications and access-controlled document management systems.
Conflict Checking
A thorough conflict-of-interest review is conducted before any new engagement is accepted. We decline matters where independence could be compromised.
Continuing Education
Our team regularly participates in legal seminars, arbitration moot programmes, and regulatory update workshops to stay current.
Data Protection
We align our data-handling practices with Vietnam's cybersecurity framework and, where applicable, international data protection norms.
Engagement Letters
Every client relationship begins with a written engagement letter that defines scope, fees, and responsibilities — no ambiguity.
What Guides Our Work
Legal services in Vietnam operate at the intersection of a rapidly modernising commercial environment and a civil-law tradition that carries its own procedural logic. For clients unfamiliar with this landscape — whether they are foreign businesses entering the market or local families dealing with succession matters for the first time — the experience can feel opaque. Our role is to make it navigable.
We believe that competent legal counsel begins with listening. Before we draft, before we advise, we take time to understand not just the legal question but the broader context in which it sits. A will is not merely a document; it reflects a family's relationships, values, and concerns about the future. An environmental compliance review is not merely a regulatory exercise; it shapes whether a project proceeds on schedule and within budget.
This attention to context informs how we communicate with clients. We write plainly. We avoid legal jargon where simpler language will do. We present options with their trade-offs clearly laid out, so that clients can make informed decisions rather than deferring blindly to our judgment.
sondeomy does not aspire to be all things to all people. We focus on three practice areas where we can offer genuine depth: succession planning, environmental and land-use compliance, and international arbitration. Within these areas, we continually invest in our knowledge — attending specialised conferences, maintaining relationships with institutions such as VIAC, ICC, and SIAC, and tracking legislative developments that may affect our clients' interests.
